This is an interesting prototype design by architect Sami Rintala called the Boxhome. The project explores quality of space, material and light over size. At 19 square meters (204.5 square feet) it is definitely small and is estimated to cost 75% less to build than comparable apartments in the same area. It also focuses on delivering the basics for comfortable living, kitchen, dining, bathroom, bedroom, living room. The spartan interior is designed for few possessions for a simple life. It’s interesting to me to see some of the tiny house concepts coming out of Europe, especially Scandinavia. They tend to be modern, minimalist, and very functional. Photo credit Sami Rintala.

The BoxHome is an interesting design, but I don’t find it friendly on the inside – reminded me of a fall-out shelter I saw when I was a kid. Also, Sami Rintala may be God’s gift to housing design, but his web site sucks. Like so many designers, the web is ubercool, but not functional or friendly at all.

All the projects seem high on visual appeal (at least to the creator) low practicality.
