Here’s an interesting concept from Japan, a truck that transforms from box truck to tiny house. When closed it looks almost like any delivery truck but when parked the top can be flipped open with the help of some air cylinders and compressed air. The upper level is a spacious 4 tatamis-mat traditional Japanese-style room. The lower level contains the bathroom, kitchen, and utilities.
While the transformer roof adds complexity and may lower the insulation value due to additional seams, this concept solves the maximum highway height issue. On the road its no higher than a delivery truck but when parked it can be as high as it needs to be.
The metal construction would also make this tiny house lighter than a wood framed tiny house, albeit not as easy to build for the non-welder. The modern industrial aesthetic isn’t for everyone either but there are so many good ideas here the project is worth careful review by anyone considering designing their own tiny home. The project website has a lot of photos and diagrams showing the entire construction process. Thanks for sending this to me Bruce!
