The $20,000 House – The Rural Studio

The $20,000 House is an on-going project of the Rural Studio, an architectural program at Auburn University. The house pictured here was designed and built by students as part of a thesis project. It’s a program designed to teach while providing affordable housing to the people of Hale County, Alabama. One of the primary goals of the project is to keep the total project cost below $20,000 so that each house can be completed by someone who would qualify for a 502 loan, a loan created for low-income people in rural communities. The program has been going since 2004.

I first spotted this on materialicious. Be sure to take a look at the Rural Studio Blog that features the construction of the house pictured above. Also be sure to see the upcoming projects blog. Photo credit to the people behind the Rural Studio at Auburn University.
