Happy Coexistence Day!

by Michael Janzen on April 22, 2009

I was hoping to do something crazy this Earth Day, like build Nine Tiny Feet, but alas… my ambition out-paced my body again and I sprained my ankle last Friday framing the roof of Tiny Free House. So instead today I’m pretty much stuck on my bum letting my heel heal.

I also had Earth Day in mind as I wrote this week’s issue of Tiny House Living and ran across a few stories that really embody what I think Earth Day is really about. One of them is a Guy Named Dave who is downsizing to 100 possessions. When I first heard his story a while back it inspired me to begin paying attention to the things I use and consciously begin to acquire and use fewer things. I also spent some time catching up on the progress of No Impact Man and watched the Story of Stuff again.

For me Earth Day is less about mother nature and more about humanity and how we coexist with her. I think back to my own Native American ancestors who lived in complete harmony with the planet just a few generations ago, (my grandmother was all or half Sioux). For these people Earth Day was everyday and they lived as part of the natural environment.

I must also admit that a green lifestyle isn’t just about being a good human, it’s about building a future that protects our freedom and happiness. Luckily each of us can make everyday Coexistence Day and bask in the rewards simply by making the choice to coexist with our little blue planet.

Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love! – Sitting Bull

Great post! I’m sorry to hear about your foot thought – what a bummer. I hope it heals up quickly, that way you can get back to building your tiny home. :)
