Shed Cluster by Architect Joseph Sandy

You might recall that Alex at Shedworking recently moved and now needs a new garden office shed. Just for fun he’s running a little design competition and has received several proposals but this shed cluster caught my eye. It was designed by architect Joseph Sandy. You might also remember the shed Joseph built out of mostly reclaimed building materials that was featured a couple weeks ago on Tiny House Blog. shedworking hq joseph sandy front

There are a lot more photos on Joseph’s blog and a very good explanation of all his design decisions. It’s also really exciting to see someone with professional architectural experience join in with all of us shedworkers, owner-builders, vernatects, and do-it-yourselfers.

You might also notice that I’ve never said anything disrespectful about architects on Tiny House Design, but that I do tend to lean toward empowering owner-builders to do-it-themselves. The reason is that as a professional designer myself, (web interaction designer), I can appreciate the expertise a professional can bring to a design project.

But as a true believer in open source and creative commons licensed intellectual property I also believe that more people benefit from ideas being open and shared. I may be nuts but I also think it benefits the author of the information/content in many more ways and can still be monetized in ways that allow the information itself to stay free.

I’m not suggesting that Joseph’s designs are free, but it is nice to see so much detail published on his blog about this design. I also realize that in many professions offering free content is not as viable as it is on the web, which is why I really appreciate Joseph taking the time to jump in and participate in Alex’s design competition and share his expertise. Thanks Joseph! May karma repay you ten-fold.
