12×24 Tiny House Preview Video

You might have noticed I’ve not been posting much on Tiny House Design lately. That’s because I’ve been spending every spare moment on finishing up this 12×24 design. As you can see by the video the plans are nearly complete. All that’s left for me to do is dimension the drawings and make the materials and cut lists in Google Layout. The drawings were all done in Google SketchUp Pro. The final PDF document will be about 80 pages and cost $9.99.

I really had no intention to invest so much time in this design but I must say I learned a lot and now have drawing tools that will make future plans much quicker to draw. The naming contest is also still running so if you have any new ideas for what we should call this house please post a comment on this post or the original naming contest post. The winner gets a free set of these plans.

Looks good. Is there a back door? I see one from the outside but don’t see where it opens into.

While I like this 12×24 plan greatly, as a person-over-50 I strongly suggest that there is enough room on the floor with the toilet for the bed(room). I also favor a bed that sleeps two (queen or larger) where each person can easily get out of their own side, not having to climb over one another to exit. Is it possible to add plumbing upstairs so that the bed and a toilet could be in the loft? This would allow the room with the wood stove to not have to lose windows to a Murphy bed…

Wow! That was really interesting!!! I still like the name I came up with a while ago: Home Shanti Home…

What about building codes? Will this be approved?

Nice job on the video and I’m glad you left in the original configuration as an option, it was always my favorite. Nice setup for the bathroom too. A very versatile design that can have several configurations imprinted on it’s interior.

    Hi Michael,

If you built it in Sketchup correctly (all pieces as components or nested components) and you still have my Cutlist plugin, then it should be automatic to generate the materials and cutlist.

The plugin has been downloaded over 15,000 times now by Sketchup users since its release. I have at least one user that I know of who wrote to me and uses it to generate cutlists for the house designs which she submits to Habitat for Humanity. They’ve built real homes using these cutlists.

This may also be an angle you may be interested in.

For those who are interested in using my plugin, it’s free and you can get it from my website

I was giving you a bad time awhile back; but really wish I had the talents you do. I think that this is the perfect design and size for a bibliophile such as my self. I think that I might end up living on the second level in order to have room for weight and books on the first. I had a question about intrance and egress for those of us who are handkcapped but I choose to be a smart a…. so never got an answer. There are some generalized answers however. First, tne steps you have designed may provide an anser to getting up the stairs. One may be able to lean against the stairs with their lower legs since they are so steep thus gaining stability and a sense of security on the way up. I did research some electric stair climbers and elevators which are probably adaptable as well. For an ordinary egress, one could use the same equipment to go down. For an emergency there are other options, one the simple brass firemans pole with an enlarged “hole” in second level floor for quick action. Since we are trained to keep our chairs fully charged for just such an emergency it would remain at foot of stairs and pole for quick departure. That leaves electricity as the remaining issue. One can visualize a dead (electricaly) chair and no escape but it would seem that if you lived on the grid; which is probably most wise in handicapped or disabled cases one could probably find a small authomatic generator to kick in and provide enough emergency power for a fully controlled exit with even enough emergency lighting to prevent becoming lost. Being handicapped is a daily challenge to overcome, but there is a lot of joy in finding means to do so and live your life independently as well as happily. Commputers and many other devices have opened up the world to those that were often known as shut ins and allowed a full and rich life on our own terms. Thought and creativity, thought and creativity. Don’ have any really cute ideas for a name but will work on it-it seems to me, even though it has two floors
to be one of the most practical homes you have designed for those with limitations. There are other possibilties for entrance and exit including ramps and dead waiter style counterwight elevators that require no electricity. Will try to explore some of the other options and forward to you. Roy

Cool video tour. What is the design load on the roof?

Can you revise the plan to include a porch and 4ft. deck off the Kitchen/Living area side along with the front door on that side verses where it is now. More than glad to pay for the revisions. These could come off the house as an add on.

Micheal, I was wondering if you could take this plan and make it 200 sqft. Would like a bedroom with open loft upstairs. Kitchen and bath room under the bedroom part. Everything else I like.

    Thanks

I am VERY ready to see these plans, I am already digging a 24″ deep crawl space with 8 concrete supports with the dirt angled to let rain water go into a sump pump. I have been looking at a desgin for a house like this for a while but the only problem with most is the loft space is not tall enough. I am 6’1″, And this house is perfect for me, I attend three colleges here in mississippi and only work one job, this house is easy enough and simple enough to build on my own ( NEED PLANS SOON! =)) so i wont have to start renting a apartment, and since i already have land im set! Im just very thankful we have smart people out there that can design houses like this! thank you sir!

  13. James says:

Haha! very nice, sir. I am very ready to see this started on my property, i earlier stated i had the 24″ crawl space being dug, today i have actually been filling in the 12″ 36″ concrete posts for the frame! I am already ahead of your plans i guess but i have been doing things like this for years so i believe it’ll work perfectly by the plans i have drawn up from your video’s and pictures, all im putting down is the supports and the floor frame and then im going to be waiting for those plans! hope to see them soon! good luck on them!

I hope to purchase a set of the 12 x 24 plans so it seems apt that the structure be called “Home” but I realize that the name may not seem too catchy. You may get arrested with “Environmental Erection”. The winner has to be the “Escape Estate”. If I do not end up winning, please add my email address to your notification of when the plans become available. If you can add a heated crawlspace using insulated concrete blocks for the foundation, it would make it easier for me to get it stamped by an engineer in Manitoba, Canada. All the best from, Calum

How can I order your plans for this house?

  16. Dan Cope says:

It is now 2011. are you plans available yet?
