Jay Shafer, the founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, has created a new series of tiny houses inspired by American Craftsman style architecture. The Box Bungalows range in size from 99 to 107 square feet and measure 7-feet by 16 or 18-feet long. Unlike the trailer-based tiny houses that Tumbleweed is well known for these are intended to be built on simple pier foundations – although they could also be built on a wide-variety of foundation types including trailers (although they may ride higher than 13.5 feet).
The houses are available as kits or complete homes; or if you’d like to build one yourself the plans are affordable ($49) and a new do-it-yourself book is available. I’ve not got my hands on a copy yet but it’s 144 pages long and filled with color photos. Each of the six designs includes a simple floor plan, four elevation drawings and window schedule. They report that 68 of the 144 pages focus on instructions & pictures to guide you through the building process.
You’ll learn how to:
- Clear the building site
- Build a foundation
- Post and beam construction
- Building and raising walls
- Putting up a sloping roof with rafters
- How to make a gable for your roof
- Installing windows, and doors
The book costs $19.95. Once you receive your book, you’ll find a code to download the Zinn Plans absolutely free… a $49 value. To learn more about the book and plans visit the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company website.
